Conservancy For Cuyahoga Valley National Park Milkweeds For Monarchs Fundraiser

The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park is partnering with Riverside Native Perennials in Delaware, OH to bring you a fundraising opportunity that will benefit the Conservancy as well as Monarch butterflies and other native pollinators. We’re offering Ohio native milkweeds in 1-gallon containers that will serve as hostplants for Monarch caterpillars and as a nectar and pollen source for countless insects and even hummingbirds. Most people are familiar with the Common Milkweed that grows in fields and along roadways but there are many other species of milkweed sporting brightly colored orange, pink and white flowers. Some species have broad leaves while others have thin leaves reminiscent of pine needles. Most species are perfectly suited to become part of your home landscape and perennial beds. By planting milkweed, you’ll be helping not only Monarchs but a host of other pollinators and caterpillars as well. Throughout summer, the flowers bustle with insect activity as bees, moths, flies and butterflies visit for food. Please take a moment to see the beautiful species we have to offer. Milkweeds are undemanding plants and reliably send up new stems and flowers every year.
Plant pick-up is at the Cuyahoga Valley Env. Ed. Ctr, 3675 Oak Hill Road, Peninsula, OH on Saturday, Sept 24 from 1P to 4P.

Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park Milkweeds 4 Monarchs Fundraiser

Thank you for supporting native pollinators and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National!

  • Milkweeds for Moist to Dry Soil and Sunny Locations

  • Price: $12.00
Common Milkweed grows 4-5’ producing pink flowers in early summer and large seed pods during mid-summer and fall. Large, broad leaves are inviting for Monarch females looking to deposit their eggs.

Full sun to part sun and dryer is preferred. We consider Common Milkweed to be the workhorse of the milkweed world. It comes up easily and grows well. More importantly though is that Monarchs use it readily to feed their caterpillars. We have several patches of it here in the nursery that we transfer caterpillars to when they start to browse the more ornamental species too heavily. Caterpillars readily transfer to this new food source and continue growing. Our plants are 1’+ tall and have 2-3 plants per 1-gallon container.
  • Milkweeds for Wetter Areas in Full or Partial Sun

  • Price: $12.00
Grows to 4-5’ and produces pretty pink flowers from June until mid-August. Leaves are long and narrow with a pointed end.

Full to part sun and wetter is preferred. Pods are slim and are held upright on the plant. Swamp milkweed is a wonderful plant that can live in a variety of conditions. At our house we have it growing well under the overhang of our roof and it has done extremely well. We do irrigate this bed because it never gets natural rain. We’ve had some individuals flower in their first year while most do not. It’s a robust grower and blooms from early June until mid August. It is a popular hostplant for caterpillars. Our plants are going 1-3’ and may even have flower buds. 2-3 plants in a 1-gallon container.
