Stark County Soil and Water has at its very heart the desire to help the natural world be just that…more natural.   In keeping with that tradition, we have partnered with Riverside Native Perennials in Delaware, OH to grow 1-gallon native Ohio perennials to benefit our native pollinators.  Among the many species of plants, we’re offering we have several species milkweeds.  As most people know milkweeds are the only hostplants for the beautiful Monarch butterfly and currently their numbers are in decline.  By planting milkweed and other species offered here you’ll be helping not only Monarchs but a host of other pollinators and their young as well.   Throughout summer the flowers bustle with insect activity as bees, moths, flies and butterflies visit for food.  Please take a moment to see the beautiful species we have to offer.  We offer native plant species for all locations.  From sun to shade and wet to dry we have a species that will produce beautiful flowers and help pollinators.

  • Price: $12.00
    An easily grown perennial which produces large numbers of bluish-purple flowers. Attractive to pollinators throughout late summer and into early fall.

    Conditions: Partial sun in medium wet, medium to medium dry soil is preferred. Grows to 2' tall, spacing at 12" and blooms from September to October.

    Now wait just a minute! Before you dismiss this beautiful wildflower because it is a goldenrod please read on! Zig Zag, and indeed a whole host of other native goldenrods, are what we call "ornamental" goldenrods. They are generally small, shadier loving plants that are part of the background color and beauty of less disturbed areas. They are well behaved and stay small with very limited spreading unlike its cousin Canadian Goldenrod. This is a perfect addition to the edge of a wooded area with moist soil and afternoon shade. Named for the alternating bent appearance of the stem

    Conditions: Partial sun to shade in medium wet, medium to medium dry soil is preferred. This plant would appreciate afternoon shade. Height to 3', spacing at 1-2'. Blooms fall from late summer into fall. An important nectar and pollen producing plant for fall insects.

    Poke Milkweed is a tall milkweed for part sun and shady areas with medium and medium dry soil. Milkweeds are, of course, the only hostplant for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. Poke can grow to 6' and take several seasons to flower. Well worth the wait for the good they provide Monarchs and other pollinators.

    Conditions: Part sun or shade is preferred as well as medium wet, medium or medium dry soil. Height to 6', spacing at 2-3'. Blooms from June into July.

    A terrific plant for enticing hummingbirds to linger longer in our yards. Red and yellow flowers provide weeks of blooms in early summer just as the hummers are heading north. Grows to 2’ or so and produces small seed pods with viable seeds. The species can reseed itself under good growing conditions.

    Conditions: Full sun, part sun or shade. Greater sun exposure will require more soil moisture. Prefers medium, medium dry to dry soils. Height to 2' and spacing at 1'. An early bloomer in April, May and June.

    Dense Blazing Star is a tall, deep purple flowering plant topping out at nearly 5'. A magnet for mid-summer pollinators. The flower has the shape of bottlebrush. Full sun offers more energy for flowering just be sure the soil stays moist in the heat.

    Conditions: Full to partial sun in wet, medium wet to medium soil. Height to 5' and spacing at 2-3'. Bloom time is July through September.

    Grows to 4-5’ and produces pretty pink flowers from June until mid August. Other flower colors including white are known from this species. Leaves are long and narrow with a pointed end. Pods are slim and are held upright on the plant. Swamp milkweed is a wonderful plant that can live in a variety of conditions. At our house we have it growing well under the overhang of our roof and it has done extremely well. We do irrigate this bed because it never gets natural rain. It is a popular hostplant for Monarch caterpillars. Our plants are going 1-3’ and may even have flower buds. As we get further into the growing season lower leaves are generally shed due to shading.

    Conditions: Full to part sun in wet, medium wet or medium soil. Height to 5' and spacing at 2-3'. Swamp Milkweed has an extending bloom time from June through late August.

    Queen of the Prairie is an incomparable plant. The flower is best descibed as an ascending plume of rose pink; quite unlike any other flower we grow. Growing conditions include wet to medium wet soil in full sun. We would suggest that this species and swamp milkweed would grow great together!

    Conditions: Full to part sun in wet or medium wet soil. Height to 5' and spacing at 2-3'. Bloom time is from June through August.

    Pretty white flowers are produced atop 5' stems that actually do look like a turtle poking its head out of its shell. A wonderful plant that attracts a good number of pollinators including bees, bumblebees and hummingbirds.

    Conditions: wet to medium wet soil in full sun is appreciated. Height to 5' and spacing at 2-3'. Bloom time is from July extending into September.

    Considered a staple of the native plant world, Purple Coneflower is an easily grown species with lovely mid to late summer purple blooms and big seed heads for birds in the fall. At home in a wide variety of soil conditions.

    Conditions: Full to part sun in medium wet, medium and medium dry soil. Height to 3' and spacing at 1-2'. Bloom time is July through September.

    White to pink tubular flowers produced en mass in early to mid summer are highly sought after by native insects. Our suggestion for placement would be in an area that is protected from the hot afternoon sun unless the your soil has sufficient moisture.

    Conditions: Full to part sun and medium to medium dry soil. Height to 4' and spacing at 1-2'. Bloom time is June and July

    Blaze orange flowers in mid-summer are followed by small seed pods later in growing season. Leaves are narrow with a pointed end. Butterfly Weed is aptly named. The orange flowers are highly attractive to many species of pollinators in addition to Monarchs. It generally takes 2 years to see the flowers, but some robust individuals may flower in their first year. Conditions: Full to part sun and dryer is preferred. Height to 2' and spacing at 1'. Bloom time is June, July and August.

    Light pink or purple flowers adorn this rather short growing native perennial. An extended bloom time through the entire summer and into fall provides nectar and pollen for a host of bees, bumblebees and butterflies. Seed production is ample which is an important source of food for birds and small mammals later in the season. Conditiions: full to partial sun in medium dry to dry soil. Height to 2' and spacing at 1'. Bloom time is June through September.

    Golden Alexanders are an important native perennial for short tongued bees. Long tongued bees, like bumblebees, can reach deep within a flower for the nectar reward thus affecting pollination. Short tongued bees on the same flowers will leave hungry. GA provides much needed nectar for fuel and pollen for growing bee larva. The flower is a lovely yellow and the plant frequently reseeds itself each year.

    Conditions: full to part sun in medium wet, medium or medium dry soils. Height to 3' and with 2' spacing. Bloom time is early: April, May and June.

    If you have the right type of soil and light this species is a dandy. Growing to 5' and topped with a reddish-purple dome of flowers, this plant is a butterfly magnet. Bloom time is late summer and helps to usher in the change of seasons. We frequently see tiger swallowtails mobbing the flowers in search of nectar. Soil conditions need to be wet to medium wet in full or part sun. This plant spreads by underground rhizomes but is not considered invasive or aggressive.

    Conditions: full to part sun in wet to medium wet soil. Height to 5' and spacing at 2-3'. Bloom time is July, August and September.

    Another in a fine line of ornamental golderods! Goldenrods are often given a bad rap because they are incorrectly thought to cause hay fever in the late summer and fall. Simply put, the lovely yellow flowers require an insect to transport the pollen, not the wind. The pollen produced by any of the goldenrods we offer are very important to local fall insects and migratory ones as well.

    Conditions: Part sun to shade in medium or medium dry soil. Height to 3' and spacing at 1-2'. Bloom time is August, September and October.

    A favorite in our nursery due to the ease of growing and the heavy bloom even in its first year. Asters in general, like goldenrods, are important sources of pollen and nectar during the fall. Goldfinches and other birds spend the waning days of fall picking the seed heads clean thus scattering seeds for small mammals. The sky-blue flowers are among the prettiest of the asters we grow.

    Conditions: full to part sun in medium wet, medium or medium dry soil. Height to 4' with spacing at 2'. Bloom time is August, September and October.
