Mid spring is primetime for our native Columbine, Aquilegia canadensis; a fast-growing perennial that seems to know get growing in the spring before trees and shrubs have leafed out.  The flowers point downward and are a cheery red and yellow.  Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies utilize this plant as an early source of nectar and pollen in the spring.   There are a number of moth species that feed on the leaves and can quickly render the plant leafless just as its energy requirements are greatest prior to flowering.  These should be removed by hand instead of by spraying.
