Downy Sunflower is a medium sized sunflower growing to 3-5′ and is named for the soft, silky pubescence that covers the leaves and stems.  Yellow flowers bloom in late summer into fall which give way to seeds eagerly fed upon by native birds.   If you’re looking for a relatively short sunflower that will not spread nearly as aggressively as this species, consider Western Sunflower.
