False Nettle does not have the stinging, irritating hairs normally associated with the name “nettle”.  A very good plant for moist soils in part shade conditions, it can grow to nearly 3′.   Flowers are small and green and are not at all showy but False Nettle is still well worth having in the garden.  A wonderful series of Nymphalid butterflies uses this plant as food for their caterpillars.  Red Admirals, Eastern Comma’s and Question Mark butterflies are brightly colored, strong flying Lep’s that are a delight to have around.  They are territorial and will actively defend their space confident in their ability to escape avian predators.  Often, they perch in conspicuous places and open their wings to display their distinctive markings.  We often see them with beak shape holes in their hindwings illustrating just how close the line is between being dinner and living to fly for another day.
