Fragrant False Indigo is a relatively small shrub or with deep purple flowers arrange in a spike or raceme.  FFI is closely related to Lead Plant, Amorpha canascens, and one of the primary differences is in the hairiness of the leaves.  FFI lacks this abundance of hairs and so the leaves appear to be dark green.  Lead Plant has many such hairs which gives it an overall dull green appearance hence the “leaden” name.  The compound leaves with small leaflets are reminiscent of fern leaves.

The flowers are infused with a honey scent which is highly attractive to pollinators.  Do not prune it in the spring as this species blooms on last year’s growth.
