Large Flowered Gaura is a biennial,  meaning it takes two years to get to the flowering stage.  The first-year plant is not much more than a basal rosette of leaves.  It’s the second years growth that produces the flowers.  LFG has a reputation as being weedy but in our experience we’ve seen the gracefully arching flowering stems swaying in the slightest breeze and it’s reminiscent of a spike of orchid flowers.  August is showtime and during these hot dry months this LFG is putting on quite a show.  Being a biennial, seeds will need to drop in order to perpetuate the clump.  This plant produces a bunch of flowers with lots of seeds which lends to its weedy nature.  Selectively removing spend flower stems before the seeds ripen (but leaving just a few for their seeds!) will help to keep this species in bounds.
