The curious aspect of this flower, and the one that makes it so appealing, is the long cone emanating from the center of the flower.  This is the long head of the Long-Headed Coneflower.  The cone can extend a full 2″ above the showy flower petals and is very unusual among the coneflowers we grow.  Flowers are held on tall stalks well above the highly dissected foliage.   The bright flower petals do their job to attract pollinators while the brown florets around the cone are involved with seed formation.  A vigorous grower with a deep taproot that tolerates drought well.
