Prairie Onion is similar to Nodding Onion, Allium cernuum with the exception that the flowers of the former are held erect while the latter has dropping (nodding) flowers.  Both grow in typical onion fashion developing a bulb and having a tall flowering stalk containing multiple flowers.  Prairie Onions flowers are a bright pink to purple in color and the flowering head may be 4″ in diameter.  As with most if not all other members of the Allium family many seeds are produced from these pretty flowers and if you do not want the inevitable seedlings the flowering stalk should be cut back after flowering.  Prairie Onion is edible although it has a strong onion flavor which grazers and browsers avoid.
