This large-flowered member of the Aster family is easily grown and drought tolerant once established.   Growing habit is a clump which can be divided every few years to re-invigorate growth.  This plant self-seeds freely and the seed heads are attractive to goldfinches in late summer and beyond.  Stiff stems are topped with large purple petalled flowers with golden orange cones that expand as the seeds mature.  Monarch butterflies and Red Admiral butterflies are common on the blooms.
