Rattlesnake Master is a tall growing perennial topped with white, spherical shaped flowers.  While technically a member of the carrot family the flower is more reminiscent of a thistle.  This round headed flower is more attractive to our native bees than our native butterflies and moths.

Rattlesnake Master’s common name, though not well documented, seems to have arisen from its use in Native American rattlesnake-handling ceremonies.  Various parts of the plant were used as salves for snakebites and for other uses including as a diuretic.  There is no documentation asserting efficacy in any of these treatments for snakebites.  I suppose we should say here that handling rattlesnakes is a very bad idea every time it’s tried and should be avoided.
